Amber's Journal

Mary Ellen chose the name, Amber, while she was recovering from injuries received during her abduction. From her hospital window, she watched as a strong wind picked up a litter of papers, then divided and scattered them in different directions. She felt divided herself. It was as if her memory had been severed—cut-off from the rest of her like an amputated limb.
If only she could penetrate the wall of blankness and dislodge her memory from its hiding place and recall her name, surely other memories would surface.
She felt the injury behind her ear and shuddered from the touch. When she asked the doctor how she had received the head wound, all he knew was that a young man had brought her to the hospital after she collapsed in his café.
She didn’t know how long she would have amnesia. She wondered how confusing it would be to keep her life now separated from her past once she began recalling events and people. Maybe I should keep a record of everything that happens to me, she thought. A journal.
